"Quilt Story Time" - Day 5

This one is called Burgoyne Surrounded. I made it back in 2013 for a pastor and his wife who lived in Kansas.

The story behind it is that in 2012 I had made a smaller one of these - just a lap size. I put in on my Facebook page and a pastor’s wife from Kansas loved it. She said she’d take one in a King size. I’m sure she was joking. But I considered what she said and decided to do it.

She was older, and this couple was just absolutely fantastic. Her husband even visited us early in our stay in Poland.

The next summer we went back to the states for a wedding and visited that church in Newton, KS. At that point, we did give the pastor and his wife the quilt. They were thrilled and it was super fun to do! I mean, they were shocked. I finished this in April of ‘13 and we gave it to them later in the year when we went back to the states for a wedding.

The quilt is large. It was my second Burgoyne Surrounded Quilt as the first was a lap size, but truly it’s not all that difficult. The block itself is not hard - just made up of a bunch of smaller elements that consisted of 9 patches and 4 patches and some rectangles. Not one triangle in it!

The small squares in this finished quilt are 1” finished, so yes, it was a lot of work.! I had already known that I liked detailed work at that point as I do like interesting designs.

I used pretty much all the scraps I could find in the warm colors of this quilt.

And that’s the story of this quilt! It was the first of the quilts that I chose to make to give to couples or people involved in ministry that might never buy such a quilt for themselves but who I think would love one.

And now you know!

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
