Reverse Culture Shock: Upon arrival back to Florida - the Plants!

I suppose when you go live somewhere else and then come back to your home stomping grounds, it is inevitable that you notice the differences between the place where you were living and where you are visiting.

In this blog post I wanted to highlight the plants of Florida that I see around me that are so noticeably different from what I have around me in Poland.

Palmettos

Mom has one that we see every morning when we eat breakfast together. She also has a big one just outside the front gate of our front pasture. This plant just looks tropical.

The huge oak trees

It’s not that we don’t have oak trees in Poland - we do- just not covered in Spanish moss. We also have little oak trees in our yard in Poland and nothing this big.

Banana trees

Yes, Banana trees. With fruit.

These little yellow flowers that grow as weeds. Thanks to those who told us they were Lantana.

Mexican petunias

At that is what my mom calls them. Mom picked one up at a yard sale and they have become invasive.

Elephant ears

I’m sure there must be a better term for them than this, but this is what we’ve called them for years now.

Loquat tree

Mom has several in her yard that I don’t remember being there from when I was young. They are bearing fruit right now so that is lovely.

Spanish Moss

It’s growing ALL OVER the place now in my mom’s place. I was used to it hanging from the oak trees. But now it is all over the ornamental plants as well.

Poinsettias

I know that these plants do not naturally bloom in December as we see them in Poland, so it did my heart good to see these plants blooming so profusely right by mom’s front door when I arrived.

So there you are - these are some of the plants that I’ve noticed this time upon arrival.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
