"Quarter Log Cabin Biggie"

Presenting - probably the easiest large quilt I have ever made.

Seriously.

It’s here.

I’ve decided to give it the completely unoriginal name “Quarter Log Cabin Biggie”.

But that is exactly what is it.

The layout is here.

I made this one out of sheets and duvet covers - as you can imagine. Otherwise, I may not have had enough of any one color. One shirt would not have provided enough fabric for most of these stripes.

The blocks here are large - 12” in fact. That makes this an 84”x96” quilt.

I quilted it with a wavy straight stitch ?? (LOL) on my regular Janome using the walking foot. I wanted to see if I could make it look good. I had made a half- hearted attempt at such quilting a long time ago and didn’t like what I did. This time, I took the time to check out more videos and a bit closer up of what others did. And this time, I really do like it.

It felt like it was what I was looking for.

The hardest part by far, of this quilt was deciding on the order of the colors of the stripes of this quilt top. I agonized over it a lot. I think I got it right. I’ve played with it with other colors, for possible charity quilts, but haven’t made any final decisions yet.

However, this one is quite opposite of what I normally do, as you know. However, it was refreshingly easy to sew and not at all difficult to quilt. I did save it for one of the last one ones of the Upcycled Greens to finish (not the last one, though!) simply because for a long time I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with the quilting.

Anyway, it is done now. I will write up this very simple quilt and put it up on the site just so if someone is looking to imitate it, they can - without any problems at all.

I am intrigued by the idea of making a single block quilt top - and think they should fit into a sort of modern esthetic? Maybe not. I don’t know. I’m not really into interior design and really wouldn’t know if it was modern or not. I suppose it might depend on which block it was. Not sure if a single uneven log cabin block is modern or classic/traditional. I suspect classic/traditional.. There is a lot of what is thrown about as modern on the internet that seems very much to be traditional. But then I think a lot of what something is is determined by what the author says it is. That kind of muddies the waters as to what might be modern and what might be traditional/classic. It doesn’t really matter, I guess…the lines do tend to be fuzzy at times.

Anyway- here are a couple more pictures.

I did bind it with alternating white, green, charcoal binding - cutting the pieces into about 12-25” long pieces and sewed them together.

It was a bit windy the day I was trying to take pictures.

The backing is all upcycleds as well - some sheets and duvet covers as well. I pieced it naturally.

The pattern is uploaded and is here. It does feel a bit funny to offer it as a free pattern since it is so very simple, but I guess the yardage needed for each color is a good thing that it is offering. :)

Oh - the Upcycled Greens series is here. I think the photos are up to date with what you have been shown as finished quilts.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
