"Drama King"
I made this one and actually finished it in 2023, but just failed to get it up here on the site, nor did I finish the pattern— until now.
I don’t know what happened last year with writing quilt patterns. I definitely was not “in the mood” to do much of it last year.
I got this one quilted beautifully by Beth and Doug Martin in Zephyrhills. They really went over and beyond anything I expected when I handed them this quilt top to finish for me!
It is part of my 2.5” series of quilt tops simply because of those inner 4 patches. Obviously the bigger red and black and gray squares are not 2.5” strips though much of the rest is actually made of 2.5” strips. However, I did not use scraps - as I pulled from my yardage for these so I would be able to get the look I needed without much stress.
I do happen to like this color combination. It is quite dramatic and I’m not sure why I like it so much since I’m naturally drawn to pastels. But then I make no sense anymore, anyway, when it comes to colors. Since I started quilting, I have grown to love them all!
This is a simple “on point” quilt with some big sold blocks and some blocks with piecing in them. I’m sure you can tell that.
I wanted to create interest in spite of the simplicity, so I did that with the colors - and also putting it on point. The cornerstones in with the sashing makes it look far more complex than if I hadn’t put them there. I used both black and red because I liked it better than limiting it to one color.
While the gray at the top and bottom may look like an afterthought - it actually isn’t. I worked with this design a long time to get another little ‘burst of something’ in spite of the simplicity and the best way I could think of was to add another color. And to red and black - to me, gray is perfect.
Because the quilt is so dramatic, I decided to call it Drama King.
I did write up the pattern for you if you want it. It’s on the site with free patterns. Here.
I hope you someone can use it!
This quilt is in Florida. I took it there to get the top quilted because I didn’t think I could do it justice - but then I left it there. I think it’s at my mom’s house. She’s gotten a little concerned because of the number of quilts I’ve now left there!! :( Oops.
Thank so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Just to remind you - as this is from my 2.5” series - here is the series to date:
