Selvages #1 Top finished

I did finish it. After two seriously intense piecing days - I got this beauty finished (as a top).

As a review, I made 10.5” blocks with a red square that I cut 3.5”. I then put these pieces on point after trimming down.

They are certainly less than perfect, but I am happy with the quilt!

This block is called simply a quarter log cabin block. I’ve made them before. This quilt has many of them.

I love what happened by using the red squares - it makes the top a lot more interesting!

This top weighs 26.13 oz. 2 lbs. would be 36 oz.

I was curious how much this top weighed since someone had commented on a blog post about how heavy her blocks were. That made me curious.

This whole top is under 2 lbs. So it’s not too bad! I guess I’m thinking of those heavy 1” finished quilts I’ve made which are shown to the right.

These are both called Checkered. Of course the top shown above is not yet a quilt nor is it a large queen like the ones shown which are in the 90” range if I remember right.

This top is about 57”x71”. I couldn’t foresee us using it on our bed, so I went with a lap size - to be used as a conversation piece in our living room.

Hopefully I will get right with the quilting and get this one done. I want to start the next one after I actually finish this one up. This series will be so massive and the selvages are so slow that I’m not allowing myself to even think that this is one of those series I’m going to go until I finish my 3 bags - at least not without stopping.

I hardly noticed a difference in my selvage bags after I made this even though I thought for sure I would! It’s absolutely crazy!

Closeups. I love looking at what brands I have used.

I kind of burned out quickly using selvages with this one, but I think one of the next ones I want to do is a spool block with them. So we’ll see how that goes. So I guess saying I burned out might be an exaggeration. I did grow tired of them, however, - and look - this isn’t even that big of a top!

Overall, I really do like it. I can see that leaving a bit more on the edges would have been helpful when cutting off the selvages from the fabric—a lot more helpful!

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
