The BIG Granny Square Quilt top

I told you a while ago now that I would take some more pictures of my whole granny square quilt made with very small blocks.

This quilt top finishes at 100”x107”.

This one is inspired by Lori Holt. I did not use her book about granny squares but I did see hers in her house in her guest room when I was watching a video showing her house tour.

(I already knew how to make a granny square block before working on this top as I’d made several granny square quilts.)

But after seeing hers, I decided to try to make one similar to hers with her favorite color schemes. I used Lori Holt fabrics AND other similarly colored fabrics from my stash. You can see at the bottom of this post that I’ve not made any others quite like this.

In the end, each block was trimmed to 6-1/2” square.

I did cut the individual squares at 1.5” and the white rectangles on the edges that ended up being trimmed off were cut 1.5”x2.5”. After the blocks was made, I put my 6.5” ruler on top of it, centered as best as I could and then trimmed down. Then I turned and did it again.

Somehow I find great satisfaction in making these blocks.

I brought the blocks WITH me to Florida and I had hoped to get the top together as I had needed the correct sashing fabric.

(I didn’t have the perfect one there in Poland, though I could have gone with something I had.) I don’t normally do that, that is, both carry the blocks over and take them back in a mostly finished form. However, this time has been different. I had spent so much time on these blocks, that I just wanted it as perfect as I could possibly get.

So, enjoy the photos.

I did have to put the top on the ground OUTSIDE. I hated to, but there isn’t much choice here unless I had wanted to hang it on the line - which is more work than I had wanted just for a top. I hope I didn’t bring in any critters into mom’s house when I brought it back in.

Earlier this year I had promised more photos as I just didn’t have the space inside mom’s house to lay out the whole top. Hopefully when it is all finished, I will get photos that do it justice as it is an amazing quilt. I did make the blocks over the course of several months as even though I enjoyed making them, because each granny square is laid out individually, there are a lot of steps to them including choose the fabrics.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

If you want to see most of the other granny square quilts I’ve done - well, here they are.

There is one more - but I’m not sure it here though I’ve shared it with you in another blog post. I don’t have good photos of the finished quilt yet, but it is similar to the current one - just with all the same color instead of a shaded sashing/cornerstones.

Except for the first one, these quilts are all on the free patterns page.

Thank you again for coming along with me on this journey.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
