“Calico Mushroom” top finished
This is yet another top made from Lori Holt’s Scrappiness is Happiness book.
After two years ago in the fall when I noticed the beautiful poisonous mushrooms in our yard, I realized just how amazing some of them actually look!
I also wanted to whittle down a few of my Lori Holt fabrics and so I decided that this would be really fun quilt top to make! I have several boxes of these fabrics and I can afford to trim the numbers of fabrics I have - plus I now have a whole shelf in my fabric room of these fabrics.
I made this quilt top 6 rows across and 5 down. The blocks are 12.5”x18.5” tall once I’ve sewn the big mushroom (12.5”x12.5”) to a group of 2 smaller mushrooms (6.5”x12.5”).
I decided to not use a Lori Holt background, but rather picked up some less expensive $6.99/yard fabric from the gray section in the store at Quilted Twins. It’s an Andover fabric. I think it worked wonderfully.
I decided to start by making the larger mushroom blocks which were 12.5” square. The pattern called for a certain number but I decided to make the quilt larger than the original one in the book. I made 30 large ones and 60 of the 6.5” squares and put together this top.
Now I did start these when I went to Florida for my daughter’s wedding in December/January. It was then that I picked up the gray and really started on the blocks - mostly I had just started thinking about them up until then. I had had my eye on this quilt for a while. So, I started then. But the blocks mostly just sat there until a couple of weeks ago when I started looking around at things I could finish. Since I felt like I had a good handle on my tops, I went ahead and started intensely on this one.
Since this is part of my Lori Holt series, I do want to update this series here. I’m up to 27 quilts using either LH fabrics or her patterns. They are mostly her patterns in combination with her fabrics. But almost always I throw something else in there besides only her fabrics. I like to use things I think will work well with them that I already have.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
