“Classic Granny Square” - Japanese inspired fabrics
Here’s another classic Granny Square quilt.
As my husband commented, “It’s very pink”! :) I was contemplating giving it to a couple we know who ministered in Japan for many years, but I was afraid it was too feminine - and when my husband said, “It’s very pink”, that kind of sealed it for me.
I’ll be looking for a lady to give this one to - preferably a lady who worked somewhere in the Asian part of the world or who loves these kinds of fabrics.
I knew that with the amount of “busyness” in these fabrics, the quilting would be almost invisible.
Because of that, I decided to just do some very closely spaced loops. I felt a little bit like I was cheating in doing such simple quilting, but I did it anyway. Because of all the seams, I wanted something that was pretty closely quilted.
The quilt is beautiful! It really is.
Making a granny square like this is pretty basic.
I did cut the strips I worked with to 2.5” squares first and then I made as many blocks as I could from the strips/squares I had. I used a creamy white on the background and sashed the blocks with a light pink and used orangey red sparkly cornerstones.
I used that same orangey red to bind the quilt.
Here are some closeups of the granny square blocks:
These were trimmed to 12.5”.
The difference between a regular granny square and the ones I made were that I let these float a bit by making that final white/cream piece a bit longer than square. So, instead of 2.5”x2.5”, I cut the white 2.5”x3.5” and sewed it on.
Then after making the granny square, I trimmed to square. This means there is MORE than 1/4” left around each color along the edge. And I like that.
I found a video that shows how to make a granny square block similar to what I did. Now this is not exactly the same, but close enough.
It makes it ever so much easier to put the top together when each point isn’t in danger of being cut off. That’s why I really like this version with the little bit of extra white around the edge of the colorful squares. There is a closeup version shown below of the blocks. You can see that there is more than 1/4” left around the colorful pieces.
I pieced the backing - it looks like this. I’m sure it adds to how pink everything looks—especially as it hangs on the line.
If I had had enough turquoise, I would have chosen that color for the background and/or sashing. However, I’m a bit limited on that fabric color right now, so I passed on that idea. I was trying to use it as the sashing, but couldn’t find just the right shade.
Oh - and this is the next one in my Granny Square Projects series. Here are most of the ones I’ve done since I started quilting a LOT (since 2013 or so).
Thank you so much for coming along with me on this journey.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
