Strings quilt in progress
I’ve been working on trying to get my works in progress a bit more organized. As a result, lately along with making some more labels for charity quilts, I decided to start cleaning up a corner of my sewing room and organizing that section.
That, alone has made me feel a bit better about all the things I’ve been working on or have started.
Among those things…here is one that I did just start.
trimmings from the string blocks - cutting out 1.5” squares from whatever I can for the next quilt
I have been throwing a lot of fabric scraps from Lori Holt quilts that I’ve been making into a few bags or zipper topped bags - remember, I now have 25 quilts in this series, so there are some bags of pieces that were various sizes. A while back I started saving strings from her fabrics and thought I might make a strings quilt from mostly Lori Holt fabrics or Lori Holt friendly colors.
These blocks are 8.5” once I have trimmed them down. I started with a 9” square piece of white fabrics and sewed the strings to them. Actually I cut the first ones at 9” but then because I wanted to make the white or black strips straight across as much as possible, I cut a bit larger square to start with - and bumped the piece to 9.25”. This does make these blocks pretty hefty.
I will be making 80 100 blocks for this one - we’ll see how much energy I am willing to exert on this project. I made a few strings projects a few years back and I kind of maxed out on them. So, this is like sticking my toes back into the water.
This is the proposed layout for the top. I admit to some fatigue with this project already, but I’ve been making good progress on the blocks.
Of course, this is just a drawing! I didn’t take the time to make all the different colors that will be in the top I’m making. Naturally it won’t be THIS organized.
But here are my blocks so far!
This has definitely scratched my itch for making another strings block quilt. I’m sure I will be cured of this desire to make any more strings blocks by the time I finish these blocks! From then on, I’ll make something else out of my small pieces and maybe save my LH strings for someone else who would love them.
While I’m not finding them particularly difficult to make, I have other things that I really like making with small pieces. I do enjoy using 1.5” squares or strips. However, I am glad I’ve been able to make these as I had so many misc. this and thats I’ve been able to use up in these blocks, and without seeing the finished top, I’m hoping it will be nice and colorful.
Here is my process of trimming this pile with a 9.5” ruler and trimming to 8.5”.
As I’ve pretty much finished my blocks by now - I have still been unhappy with the layout I showed, so I’ve been playing with other layouts as well. I guess I’ll reveal what I end up making with these 100 blocks once I get it done.
I decided to use the black and white with these fabrics because of inspiration I got from this video. I want you to see it.
When I finish this one, it will be another smallish queen size quilt, and just to keep you up to date, this is where I am on my Lori Holt series.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
