March 2026 Strips Cutting Report
This month, among other things, I ventured back into a closet area that has been blocked for some time now. I pulled out some bags of stuff and am in the process of deciding what to get rid of and what to actually deal with. There are even more shirtings.
I’ve decided that it was far quicker to collect all these shirts than to actually deal with them!
So, I’ve decided to pass on most of them, however, after watching Sunbeam Fabric Art’s channel on You Tube and noticing how she cuts things into precuts a lot of times, I figured I’d at least take a cut of a 10” square if I liked the fabric - to make my own 10” stackers or Layer Cakes as Moda calls them.
1250 grams - didn’t count how many pieces, but it is the weight of 3 Moda layer cakes
So I’ve done a bit of that. It is hard to measure how much, but I can weigh them - which I think I will do. This will be an additional cut that I make before I throw the remainder into bags of things to pass on to others.
396 grams for one official Moda layer cake
There is a group of people in our town which forms a No Waste group. I’ll admit that the vast majority of the time I give things away in this group. Only a few times have I gone to get something. I have given away copious amounts of batting scraps and various things we were finished with including furniture. It is a give away group, however and not a marketplace. I think I will approach some people in the group who might do crafts with kids or adults and may like some fabric for fabric collage, etc.
Anyway, this past month I worked hard on quilt tops for charity but didn’t cut down a whole lot. I did start collecting more leftovers that I could cut down, but didn’t spend the concentrated effort to do so as I’ve been trying to reach a certain goal in making charity tops.
But this is what I did do. I did not make much of a concentrated effort this month to cut down strips as I’m in the midst of working on charity tops and am not sure I’m ready to cut off the strips I’m cutting lest I need them. When I finish for the moment, then I can. In the meantime, I did trim down a few things.
10” squares - 2.75 lbs. shown above
2.5” - 0.96 lb.
2” - 0.34 lb.
1.5” - 0.09 lb. :) (almost nothing)
The overall picture
This is the overall amount for the year. So far, it’s not been much. I’ve had other things on my mind this winter.
Here are the totals since I started keeping track when I had so many bags of scraps to deal with. I had taken them to the church because I had no more room in my house for them. But I did. It’s why I had so many in those early days.
