"Long Underwear" Quilt progress report
This one is ever so gradually coming along. I have turned to working on the border - which is pretty involved, so it’s not a fast process.
I got the center together. It’s here. I mentioned this last week.
I’m working on these outer border blocks which are somewhat involved.
Here are the blocks. I need 32 for the quit top as written!
I did spend some time on these blocks this week.
I will admit to not being totally crazy about the way Lori (Holt) tell us to make the half square triangles (HST). She has you make a 4 patch first and then make an “easy corner triangle” on the colorful blocks. I find it actually harder than just making regular half square triangles. But I was determined to try to master this technique. I will admit that I’ve not conquered it completely yet and had more cut off tips than I care to admit.
Oh well.
In some ways it is easier as you don’t have to make a bigger HST block and then trim down. BUT, I haven’t figured out any sort of consistency to it yet and so end up making those edges without enough sea allowance. You can tell in these gold HST on the top right, especially. I’m working on it.
But I was sort of enjoying putting all the colors on this. The pattern doesn’t show this much variety. I thought her colors were a bit boring (maybe I shouldn’t admit that), in the picture in the book.
I didn’t like keeping to the yellow, teal, red, and such in those outer blocks. I wasn’t sure if they were supposed to represent winter. So I threw out that idea, as I thought it would make the top less fun than if I made the blocks more colorful.
Once again - this book is called Prairie Home and has about 42 patterns in it! This is only one of the many quilts in the book that I like.
So far I’ve made Prairie Stockings, Prairie Crochet, am working on Prairie Home and now this one Long Underwear. Let me share with you those just to remind you.
This book is worth every penny!
Enjoy! I’m getting close to finishing up both this one and the Prairie Home quilt, so probably time to flip through the book and figure out which ones I want to do next. There are literally so many!
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
