"Two-Way 9 Patch" - Another in the Stephanie Slewinski fabric series (#10)

This one I’m calling “Two-Way 9 Patch”.

It’s really a simple quilt and it consists of a regular 9 patch using 2.5” squares and then a 9 patch consisting of 1.5” squares and then framed to make a 6.5” (unfinished) block so that both blocks are 6.5” before being put side by side.

The drawings for the blocks look like this.

Normally a 9 patch plus a plain block is a Single Irish Chain quilt when you make the background all the same so it flows. Let me slip a picture in here.

This one is like that except instead of a plain block, a smaller 9 patch is plugged into the center of that plain block. I’ve seen this idea over and over using a smaller interesting block surrounded by the background so that it all flows together.

However, the idea behind this one is to use up the leftover small pieces that I had in my container, which I did!

Even though I’ve not shown you the other two tops that I am hoping to get done soon, this one is coming here at the tail end of the process of using up these fabrics. Because of that, I ended up using a lot of the lower volume creams going around the blocks. I’m conflicted on whether I like it or not. I mean, I do like it but I also might prefer a plain cream.

BUT, I knew it would happen as these printed cream backgrounds are the ones I didn’t use very much and such, I had them leftover. The line had 2 plain cream fabrics and I had already pretty much used them up. So, overall, I’m happy with it.

I had gone through and cut a lot of my various scraps into 2.5” squares and either 1.5” squares or 1.5” strips. When I could, I did strip piece the smaller 9 patches, but for some, I did piece individually.

I had used a LOT of those little 1.5” squares in this top, however. I had decided before making that one (Center Focus) that I just had to cut up all the misc. fabric smallish pieces into 1.5” squares and then toss the rest.

I did have to reach out to my stash for the border fabric, but it is fine. I also threw in more plain cream fabrics into the mix to make this top. But I did that throughout the series as I just needed more background fabric in cream than I had in the series. It tends to work that way, however.

I am almost completely done with the series. I will admit to getting a little sidelined with other things in the last few days, but I am close enough to finishing that at least #11 should not be too long in coming.

The very last one might be longer even though it will not be a large quilt - but the blocks will only be 4” finished so there’s that.

These tops are made from this line of fabric by Stephanie Slewinski - Foraged, Found, and Hand Me Down. Her company is Fancy That Design House and this is her style so her lines look at least someone similar, from what I’ve seen. My husband loves these colors whereas as I’ve grown older I’m really enjoying the brighter lines by other designers - plus thirties colors. I guess I’ve just become more eclectic as I have grown as a quilter.
