“Plaid” quilt top finished
I am managing to squeeze in some piecing along with the charity piecing and power quilting I’m doing. Truthfully, it is the piecing that “gives me joy” if you want to word it that way - as I enjoy it the most.
I started on these blocks back in December, I believe. I had seen this quilt several times - the quilt I first saw on Lori Holt’s You Tube channel, but also in her book Scrappiness is Happiness.
The first few times I saw it I didn’t really care one way or the other about it, but it hit me that maybe it would be a good one for me to attempt. I loved the deeper colors of Lori’s palette, so I chose to make this out of the darker, but not only the fully saturated colors - of Lori Holt’s fabrics. I thought it would make a more interesting quilt than if I threw in a lot of pastels. However, I didn’t have enough of the really deeply saturated colors, so I used what I had. This means I did use some from her Christmas line in it and some from the Autumn line. I did try to stay away from larger floral prints, though there are a couple of them in here. I wanted this one more about color and less about any individual designs.
It did take 182 different fabrics for the main blocks as each block is a different fabric - can you believe it ??? It’s a 13x14 layout so it is a big queen. (91”x98”). I will just do a scrappy binding on it.
My husband told me this is evidence than I am a hoarder. Yikes.
Maybe I am.
However, I will say that so far I’ve made 25 quilts out of Lori Holt fabrics, so I can’t say that I’m entirely a hoarder since I am actively and relatively quickly using them up. Let me add that a few of those 25 quilts didn’t use “only” Lori Holt fabrics. This might be one of the few where I’ve used her fabrics exclusively.
I have some others in the works or at least planned, but I have some other tops I need or want to get going on even if just half an hour a day at first. I find that sometimes I’m a slow starter but after I get the hang of a block or more or less get organized, I start to gain some steam. Right now I’m feeling very distracted. If you saw my house, you’d understand as I have entirely too many things going on at once!
LOL
This block is just 4 squares with sashing and a cornerstone. I did press all those seams open, and believe me, this quilt took 4x longer to make because of that than if I had pressed them to one side.
However, it makes it very flexible as to the way you put the blocks together.
Back to the Lori Holt series. Here is where I am so far.
Now, to be truthful, I have quilted quite a few of those shown here - just not shown there here because I’ve not washed/photographed them yet.
I did just order a king size 80/20 batting so I can do that one for my son and daughter in law. The batting should be here in a few days. I could use poly, but I really find it easier to quilt on the 80/20 and it’s big - and I wanted to do this one with cotton batting. I’ve almost completely used up all the batting like that I have.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
