Japanese themed fabrics Granny Squares!
This particular top I had almost finished before heading to the states for my daughter’s wedding! I had made the 36 nice big blocks and had sewed them into strips. I also had the sashings and cornerstones sewn together, but I had not put the whole quilt together.
I decided to change that because it was time to get this one done!
And so I did.
I was in a quandary about the border, so I decided to just be wild and use this design which has both cool and warm pinks in it.
I am not totally taken by the look but I’m not changing it now. I didn’t have any Japanese fabrics to put on there.
I just need to remember that on a queen bed, this border will hang off the sides and what you see first is the actual middle of the top. So I’m okay with that.
This one finishes at 98”x 98”.
I used a couple of already cut 2.5” strips rolls that I found that feature Japanese fabrics, but they weren’t exactly a great quality. But I decided to just go ahead and use them and try to just work at making this. But in a way, that is probably why I didn’t finish it before - because the fabrics, while pretty to look at, were not particularly fun (in texture) to work with. Sometimes fabrics are so super smooth and amazing and really fun to work with.
The border fabric I used was nice and like that, but the fabrics that I used for the granny squares blocks were not super nice. But don’t worry, it isn’t anything we sell at Quilted Twins!
The border fabric I made is from King’s Garden fabric - and you can get it here!
The Granny Square blocks look like this - and I did use 2.5” squares. After adding a bit larger oute squares (2.5”x3.5”, I trimmed my finished blocks to 12.5” square.
Overall, I do love granny squares and this one is beautiful - but it will have to go on a guest bed as I don’t see my husband being very crazy about it! "It’s waay too pretty!” :) He goes more for the Civil War colors like burgundies, browns, etc.
I now have finished yet another Granny Squares top.
Let me share with you the ones I’ve done so far.
Thank you so much for coming along with me on this journey!
