Blue Strips Quilt #3 - Pinwheels and Strips!
This quilt is a direct spinoff of the second quilt in this mini series I made - because I had leftover pinwheel/strips combo units.
They looked like this: The individual pieces were 6-1/2” which meant, once I sewed 4 together, I had a 12” finished block! It’s a wonderful size for a quick quilt!
I decided on this layout for these pieces. I went with wonky star points for the sashing strips.
I felt like this design needed something to help it be better.
I think the white wonky stars did that with the 9 patch corner blocks.
Considering that with these quilts, I’m using a bunch of 2.5” blues strips - I’m happy about these!
At first I thought these wouldn’t be nice enough for QOV, but honestly, after seeing some of the ones people receive, I’m okay with them now. I’ll quilt stars on them and they will be nice.
And now I just have some blue strips on a roll. I do have a couple more already figured out that I want to make, so I think I will go ahead and cut up the blocks for them and get going on them. I don’t want this series to go on and on. It’s something I’d like to see quickly finished up as tops, anyway.
Here’s how it looks overall.
My husband stood and looked at it and said something to the effect, “Are those points supposed to be small like that?” I told him, “Yes, they are supposed to be wonky!” He just said, “Ok” and moved on.
He likes things to be very symmetrical.
Overall, with this one, I am very pleased. Very, very pleased in fact. Making the wonky points took a good bit of time and I was so afraid i was going to run out of the white I was using. yes, I certainly could have added scrappy whites, but because I was using that very bright white on most of it, I wnted to be able to make them all the same. If I had been going scrappy, I should have gone scrappy from the beginning.
Then I took another picture from the other angle.
I did put hearts in the corners - just to give a little extra thank you to the serviceperson who gets this one.
I added that extra bit of blue around the outside of the hearts just so the heart wouldn’t get chopped off with the binding as my binding tends to be wider than 1/4”.
I do want to use red or red/white binding.
