Update on my “Prairie Home” quilt top

I am working on the Praire Home quilt of the book Prairie Home.

It’s the one that is on the book cover. I wanted to make this quilt from the time I saw it.

I have started with a few pieces made.

Let’s see.

I have the house part made.

This has been done for a while now. The roof is not there because I have to make some other things before adding the roof. At least, I had to decide on the background, which I have by now.

I have the small-ish log cabins for the top part here.

I have all 30 finished. They are 5-1/2” square.

Now I’m starting the log cabins that are along the bottom - and I’ve finished just a few of the stars. I hope to have all the center stars finished by the end of this week and a few of the blocks completely finished. I need 40. We’ll see how that goes. It’s a goal I might make. I might not, as well.

Instead of doing the flying geese as in the Prairie Home book, however, I’m making them like I learned in a different book that use the 4-at-a-time method. These are SMALL flying geese - finished pieces as 1.5”x2.5” to finish at 1”x2”, so they are small. I found that I liked them when I made them for my Quilty Fun top. Remember that one? (They are shown on the right in the photo below. Both books are by Lori Holt.)

Anyway, I had never done them this way before that made them for that project.

I thought they turned out amazingly well and better than any other flying geese I had made - esp. such small ones, so I decided to just tackle these the same way. Since I need 40 blocks’ worth, it’s a fair few, but they are perfect for this block since all the flying geese in each block are the same.

I’m loving how these are turning out.

I’m tackling them a few at a time so hopefully I can be careful and not get careless.

I am seeing that when I get in a hurry, I get going too fast and then it shows up in bad geese. LOL

Since these little flying geese units are only 1.5”x2.5”, when you mess up, it shows. With small units, it is more important to be extra careful as there isn’t much room for error. I’m enjoying learning to be more exact while making these.

This one will be slowly getting done-ever so gradually—until I get all these little log cabins with the star centers done. At that point, it may jump it to the front of my ‘to do’ list since I will start to feel like I’m getting closer to getting all done.

I am not as thrilled with the rest of the design as it feels a little bit disjointed to me (the area around the roof of the house).

I’m thoroughly enjoying working on these blocks, however. The idea of having such a beautiful top is keeping me going as well.

Thanks again so much for coming along with me on this journey.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
