I cut out all 49 9.5” squares for this top a while ago now. They’ve been sitting in my sewing room, being ignored. I had cut out all the squares and at least some of the sashing pieces I don’t know…maybe back in June? Hard to remember.

I didn’t have the pieces cut for the cornerstone blocks.

I had wanted to save up and cut those out of anything I had leftover from cutting the piano key borders because it would take 1.5” strips which are pretty handy to use up small pieces. I used 2.5”x5.5” for the piano keys.

I decided it was time to go ahead and start making the sashing pieces. It’s really easy sewing, and this top wasn’t going to get finished until I got to making them. I was working on a couple of other things, but decided to start putting together the sashing pieces anyway kind of in between other things.

I have a couple more airplane tops to make but wanted this one out of my way for the time being. Since I’ve made this top so many times, it’s not really very exciting to make BUT I like the finished product.

So I made it. It didn’t take very long - as there are 112 sashing pieces and 64 cornerstones.

The piano key border may have been the most work. I was able to cut up the leftover odd shaped pieces from the fussy cutting I had to do to get the pictures in the center of the blocks into the piano key border pieces AND the cornestone strips.

Yes, I like it. It ended up being more red/white-cream-tan/blue than I had planned, but those were the colors of the airplane fabrics I had. It wasn’t really intentional that it happened that way. It’s not as if I can go find more. I used what I had. I had collected these for some time - but mostly from our own shop. Some fabrics - I have no idea where they came from.

But it’s pretty - very nice. I love my fussy cut planes.

The top passed the approval of my husband, for which I’m thankful! My husband has both his pilot’s license and an A & P (mechanic) license.

This is number 3 in my airplane series. Here is the series of tops so far.

None are quilted yet. This is the biggest one. So far I’m liking this series! The next few will take a bit of a turn as to what I’m going to do. THEN, I have several pieces of yardage and a couple of Moda Jelly Rolls in a line called “Flying High” I think it is. I felt the need to get these done before I work on those.

The next one I will start on is the paper pieced one. I’m kind of scared of it, but we’ll see. It looks like this. I’ll put the plane I want to make next to it. This one will be for my husband’s brother.
