Garden Report - End of June 2024

Well, time is flying by. I’ve been spending time daily in the garden trying to stay on top of the weeds.

I have been disappointed in the yellow beans but I’m going to plant more. I haven’t done that yet. The 8 or so plants I have are here - and they are growing nicely. As hot as it is being, however, everything is growing quickly now.

In the end, I think I only had 8 seeds come up from that packet. Not good. Once again - I guess I planted too early.

My pole beans are growing well. They are here. They should be able to grow up the fence line. They are the light green plants shown below. Last year I had a lot of weeds that the plants grabbed. This year I’m hoping to make sure the beans actually grow up the fence line.

I have various pumpkins - mostly decorative and small sugar pumpkins growing around the outside of the garden - also along the fence. I want to train the plants to go up on the fence as it looks super cool to have them grow there.

My corn is doing well. I’ve been weeding it and need to get it fertilized in the next couple of days.

For sweet corn it is growing just fine. Most of it will be knee high by the fourth of July which is a saying that tells you if your corn will get ripe in time before the summer is over. I did plant two kinds, however, and one kind is shorter than the other so we’ll see what it all ends up looking like. I planted a yellow kind and a bicolor kind (yellow/white).

Here is a variety of the plants. I have zucchini planted. If it grows and grows as well as it appears, I will have enough to stock everyone in the church and our neighbors who love it as well. I grow it mostly for fun. Last year I planted a second planting, however, it didn’t produce at all, so I won’t do that this year.

This row of pumpkin plants will eventually grow up the fence line. Our neighbors can pick the pumpkins that grow on her side of the fence. :) They are growing along that hose line. This is the next area where I will be hoeing out the grass/weeds. My husband didn’t rototill this area. Either I’ll hoe it, or I will cover it with a lot of compost.

I also planted a lot of sunflowers - and they are sort of interspersed with the zucchini.

My tallest sunflowers were self seeded. In other words, they came up from last year’s sunflowers. So we’ll see what they end up looking like.

So there you are.

The pretty yellow flowers along the fenceline are looking nice as are the flowers on the back patio. My husband (mostly) pressure washed the brick on the patio. I helped him. It was a lot harder and took longer than I thought it would.

My flowers on the back look nice again. I just bought a few more plants I wanted to add to the collection - some purples and grays.

So there you are!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!

Thanks for coming along with me on this journey!
