"Simply Rails "- Up Greens series

I’m kind of in shock that this one was completed missed by me! I discovered that I had never shared this one when I was making up my folder of finished quilts and my Word document that goes with it.

It’s part of my Upcycled Greens series and I actually finished this back in 2024. I don’t know what was going on that year, but I missed something during that time.

As a basic rail fence design, it is stunning. I am fascinated by the ease of a traditional rail fence design, anyway. I don’t think it is used quite as much as it could be. Or else, maybe it is, but people don’t always point out that the design is really a rail fence.

This particular one is a 2-rail rail fence pattern. In this way, it is the same as this one shown below in black/pastels - only much bigger.

Anyway, I love how this one turned out!

By the time I worked on greens, my definition of green was “if it has a lot of green in it” As a result, a lot of florals or scenery fabrics are in this category for me.

A simple rail fence constantly surprises me. On a different day’s blog post, I may go through all my free patterns and share with you all the ones based on a rail fence block.

For th border, I just cut 6.5” wide chunks of those green pieces and sewed them together to form a border. I was running out of larger pieces by this time.

Because my greens encompassed a lot of different fabrics and colors, it makes for a nice, bright quilt.

I used a lot of those leftover pieces on the border with some nice sized cuts. Because these greens were so varied, I added that navy to give some focus.

At this point in the series, I really didn’t have much dark green left - even though it is only #18.

I did go ahead and upload the pattern to the website under the free patterns page.

I hope someone can use it, if you have any scraps or a variety of scraps, and want to use them - just look for something very strong - a bold color that can be used as the focal point as I used the navy here.

Of course here by my using the greens it also helps a bit with the cohesion. The main strips in this quilt were 2.5” wide.

In the smaller example shown above where I compare two of the same design, I used black as the strong color and then pastels -- all sorts of pastels from my 1.5” bags of strips.

Here is the Upcycled Greens series as it stands now. I am getting ready to bind several more of these quilts.

Thank you so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
