A Scrappy QST quilt in progress

I decided to try this one. Call me crazy if you will.

I had these little cut offs from some of my Lori Holt fabrics which instead of sewing regular half square triangles (HST) I made quarter square triangles (QST) from them by sewing them across the other direction.

With these I am using the smallest pieces. Seriously small. I have thrown so many of these away because when I turned them into regular HST they were too small to be practical. By making them into QST I am able to trim them to 2”. This makes them 1.5” once finished in the block.

I will be making this top over the course of a year or more, probably, until it is the size I want it or need it to be. Since I am using only cut offs from Lori Holt fabrics or projects, it will take a while. I’ve already thrown away a lot of these small pieces I could have made these blocks from.

It’s okay. It’s a never ending process - this making of very small scraps.

These are the pieces I’ve started with.

I then sewed across the straight edge and not the bias - which then looks like this: (sample one - not these exact triangles)

I sewed two of those together to get these. No, these are not the exact pieces, but this is what I have been doing.

Then, I trimmed them down to 2”x2”.

Then I added 1.5” white strips to the edges of these centers. After that I trimmed them down to 3.5” x 3.5”.

My plan for these blocks is now to add a 2” strip of Lori Holt or Lori Holt friends (goes with) fabrics for the outside of these blocks. This should make a 6.5” x 6.5” block.

Then I will put them together just like I did the Plaid quilt. If I press open (!!) I can add to any side at any time without even thinking about it.

And here is the overall plan. The exact size - well, we’ll see what I end up doing. As I said, this will be a report every once in a while.

I fully expect it to take longer than my granny square quilt (shown to the side of these words) I made simply because I want to use my cut offs from sewing other things.

And this one took a while.

The advantage about the quilt I want to make is that there will be no sashing and I can “grow the quilt” as I have blocks.

Maybe I’m crazy for doing this, but I’m going to attempt to do this.

I’ll let you know if I am crazy or not. LOL

Since the only part of these that are finished are to the white little block around the middle QST, my plans could change. We’ll see. I have several other ideas rattling around in the back of my mind, depending on how long I want this one to drag out.

I”ll keep you posted every once in a while.

Thanks for coming along with me on this journey.
