Next Installment of that Crazy Mask Panel quilt top
The next installment of that quilt while using the mask panel is here. This is the third panel - I was able to get 18 rows out of it - probably has to do with the amount of white and the fact that I had some leftover segments from the other two panels.
I then like to lay them out and take a picture before I actually sew the groups together. The top, larger piece is panel 1 and panel 2 together.
It is imperative for me to double check that the designs continue as they should before attaching this group. Of course, a person could add row by row and watch it grow. But it is more unwieldy and harder to sew than a smaller group of strips.
The top now looks like this and I’m very pleased.
The more I work with it, the more it just becomes color and design and I lose the awful teeth and crazy designs which I did think were pretty bad on this particular fabric panel.
This is an example of the truth to the saying, “if the fabric is ugly, just keep cutting it smaller until it is just color”. I wasn’t able to get only color on all of the rectangles, but enough so that the design is no longer objectionable.
I mean, so many of the designs on this mask panel are just awful. Horrid. And that is what is making this little quilt top so fun.
We know what it was made from.
I want to finish out the top so that the design is “closed” or at least finished in a logical place. We’ll see as I work on the next panel.
I do plan on leaving this one here in Florida so they can have it here. It is going to be approximately 48”x60something before I stop.
I want to finish so that the white pieces finish up the segment - either just like the top or as a closed design. We’ll see how many strips I have.
I did cut it all into strips of 2.5” and then sewed strips together and then subcut. I cut 7 - 2.5” white strips to go with the 2.5” strips of the colorful panel. I then made strip sets to match the rows - so a white/color/white and then 3 colorful, etc. It made it go together quite fast.
I didn’t worry about similar colors showing up near either in the finished top because the mask panel fabric doesn’t actually have a LOT of different colors. There is an awful lot of turquoise, yellow, rainbowy and tons of black/white. I figured in this one, the overall design, carried by the white was what I was going to focus on.
So, one more of these mask panel quilt top updates and it should be ready to be quilted.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
