Double 9 patches in Blue and cream
I had made 250 small 9 patches back this summer - they measured 2- 3/4” square before I sewed them into this top.
Upon finishing, this means they are 2-1/4” square. Each double 9 patch block is 6-3/4” square after it is sewn into the quilt.
I made the blocks as part of Edyta Sitar’s summer 9 patch challenge. I put them away while I worked on finishing up the 120 charity quilts for 2025 and then our trip to the states.
I decided it was an easy finish and something I just wanted done already, so I decided to just make the top. Now this was just a curiousity because I had never made such small 9 patches before. I decided I did not want a queen size quilt from these 9 patches, so I only made a smaller quilt. However, I did add a border - as I had previously planned. I just made this border a tad bigger than I originally drew it.
This top finishes at approximately 70”x83”. This could be used as a large twin - though not the length of a typical twin or used on a full bed which is a mattress that is 54”.
More than likely it could be used as an additional quilt on top of a main quilt for additional insulation. I know we often use multiple quilts on our bed in the winter as it gets chilly at night in our house!
I usually make quilts like this as a queen, but I decided that I’ve made some large quilts as 9 patch quilts, if not double 9 patch, and I didn’t have anyone in mind for this quilt, so I decided to not push myself and just make a smallish one like this. Because it’s not usual for me to make this size, I will use this one as an extra.
I am looking forward to getting this one quilted.
I used a variety of off whites/creams as the white in this one. The blues - I searched among my stash to find that certain shade and color that Edyta Sitar likes so that maybe I could have her look. I found that I don’t necessarily have that much of that particular blue in my stash as I was looking for. I mean, I have a LOT of blue, but lots of darks, or more true blue such as a royal blue and aqua types. However, I was trying to keep this one into a more of that warm blue that should go well with this cream background.
So there you are - this top goes on to the pile of quilt tops needed to finish up for 2025!
Thank you so much for coming along with me on this journey.
