Selvedge Quilt #2 - Spools! top finished
I knew that this would be the second block I made from my selvedges. I also know what I want to do with my third, but it is time for me to at least start quilting a few of my own quilts for 2025. Naturally I like to piece better than quilt, but once I finish quilts, I like that the best!
Anyway, I made rather large spool blocks. I made about a 9” square block of selvedges and then trimmed them to 8.5” square. Then I added a 2.5”x8.5” strip of white to each side and put the spools block top and bottom on with a brown strip cut 2.5”x12.5” and put a 2.5” white square on each end and did an easy corner triangle to make the diagonal line. The block looks like this: I showed the actual selvedges as colored fabrics.
The block finishes at 12.5” x 12.5” before being sewn into the top.
I ended up making 24 blocks for this top. Once again, these selvedge quilts - they are more for the novelty of it than something I see myself using on a bed as the main quilt - maybe folded up on the bottom of the bed.
Here are the first of the blocks:
I made this one simple - and the top finishes at 56”x80”. I tried to make a variety of colors of the selvedges varying from yellow to red, dark red, purples, blues, and oranges.
I used up all the brown of this particular bit of yardage - in fact, had to piece a few of the spool tops/bottoms to make it possible to not introduce another shade of brown.
But let me share with you how awful my sewing area got while trying to find the specific colors needed for this top. As such, I was ready to get the blocks quickly made so I could pick these back up and thrown back in the bags. When I said I had a lot of selvedges, I meant it.
I hope you see that I wasn’t exaggerating! I did pick them all back up and put them back into two clear bags. Obviously I could make literally dozens of quilts with these things! At this rate, I can’t even imagine how many I could make.
Remember - my first top is here - I want to get this one quilted very soon! in fact, I hope before this blog post goes live, I at least have the first one quilted. (I do not, but as of today, the third of Dec. it is on the long arm, waiting for my attention.)
But here is my second quilt in this series!
Here are some closeups!
These are rather large spool blocks. In fact, these are 12.5” square - but I am so glad to have these finished!
Thanks so much for coming along with me!
The next one I want to make is this one - sneak peek! I saw these on a You Tube video so now I have to figure out how to make these trees. I doubt I’ll actually finish these in 2025, however.
So there you are - I wish I could say that I can see a difference in how many selvedges I have - however I can’t. Not even a tiny bit.
One thing- however, I have been using some of my random 2.5” strips in making binding strips - and I can tell that I’ve actually used up some of them! Yeah!
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
