Airplane Series #4 - Piper Cub paper pieced project

I did it. I dug in.

I had to go review how to do paper piecing. I used Karen Brown’s video with Just Get it Done quilts on You Tube. That is here.

I had done some paper piecing before but it’d been a while. A long while. Plus, I was never clear on doing it - and even back when I did do it, I was confused in my brain on how to keep it from being backwards.

So, after a nice clear lesson on how to do it from Karen, I decided to begin to tackle this pattern.

I needed to ease into this project slowly - to gain some confidence again with paper piecing.

I had bought this pattern on Etsy and my husband told me that his brother has had this plane. He wanted me to make this for Mark, but in orange/blue like this:

So, that’s my plan. Naturally it won’t be quite exactly the same as there seems to be more shading with the pattern than my picture has.

Anyway, I am breaking this into several blog posts because I can’t do this quickly. I just don’t think I can. In fact, I am not doing that to myself.

I will say that by following how Karen Brown explained how to do it, I am not finding it difficult at all after the first row of mountains (which truly were a piece of cake - but the second row…different story!) , and for that I am most grateful. Someone in her comments mentioned that is how Judy Niemeyer teaches people how to do her quilts. Maybe I will get more confidence after this and tackle something more difficult. (I’ve always loved the Hosta quilts with Judy’s designs.)

Anyway, this quilt has 7 rows. The first row is all sky. The 7th row is all ground. That leaves only 2-6 that actually involve piecing.

I decided to start off easy with the first row of sky and then the first row of mountains. The next row - row 3 will have the plane and mountains and even a little sky integrated, which is much more complicated.

As such, I’m not sure how fast I will be able to do this going forward. I’ll try. It will get confusing and I’m not going to try to do as much as I did today.

Here are the first two rows across. It’s not much to look at yet, but just wait til the next update!

You can tell I’ve not taken all the paper off yet. I will before it is all done, however. From what I read, they recommend leaving the paper on a lot of it as you put it together.

But what do I know? not much.

Here is the airplane series so far.

The next part of the series will including using the line of Moda fabrics called High Flight. I don’t have the whole line, but I do have some of the fabrics and have been working on some designs that should work with what I have. Because we were late ordering the fabrics, and I did want the whole line, we got some Jelly Rolls, and I do have two of those to use.

I’ll just have to share those fabrics with you when I work with them.

In the meantime, this airplane is being made of mostly solids. (I’m not a huge fan of solids, but I use them because I have them!). Sigh. I know lots of people actually prefer solids…and believe me, because I’m here in Poland, I use them a lot because that is what do we have a lot of at reasonable prices. But …. to me there is nothing quite like a good blender!

Anyway, I’ll get back to you in a while when I have a nice update on this quilt top. It is intense. I am so in awe of the people who designed this pattern. It’s Coffee Town Quilting and I bought mine on Etsy. Here is the pattern as she designed it.

If my sister in law reads this blog, I’m begging you not to tell your brother about this, okay? I’ve got no reason to believe that my BIL who will be the recipient of this quilt ever glances at the blog, so I’m not afraid he’ll ever see it unless someone were to clue him in. :)

Thanks again so much for coming along with me on this journey.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
