"Grandma's Sampler Quilt" top finished
I finished this top recently and I really like it. Oh, this one has a lot of issues, but I like it anyway. I felt like I was never going to get finished with the flip and sew method of adding corners, and I kind of lost patience for them, but I did it anyway.
This is in my Prairie Home book featuring about 42 quilts by Lori Holt. This makes number 5 that I’ve finished from that book. Ther are at least 10 more in this book I want to make. This book is well worth the money - have you noticed the price of patterns lately?
This one isn’t a huge quilt, but it’s not tiny quilt either, so it is a bit quicker than a lot of quilts to make. Well, it’s deceptive. It’s 69 1/2” x 87 1/2”, so plenty big enough for a large twin or a smallish double. However, because of the direction of the quilt, it probably will be a better wall hanging or just a quilt on a couch or draped over a chair.
I didn’t necessarily the prints that the book did (maybe the outer border is the same), but I did use all Lori Holt fabrics but I substituted what I had, trying to come close to the colors as I liked what I was looking at in the book.
I was trying to go for “sweet and pretty”.
I knew I was going to have my hands full when I started putting on the borders. For some reason I was thinking it had 5 (five!) borders.
However, I was wrong. Very wrong. It has 7 (Seven!) borders! Needless to say, just putting on the borders took most of two days, especially since I needed to press the pieced ones, etc. I really had finished most of the piecing of the pieced borders before I started putting it all together. Doesn’t matter. Still took quite a while because things still had to fit.
It was my bad. I had thought previously that I could kind of “sneak this in on myself” since I was under the misassumption that it was a small quilt. LOL
I will gladly admit that after that other one (Outdoors) by Elizabeth Hartman and then all the stitch and flip corners on this one - I’m ready to do something with squares and rectangles for a bit. Or just regular half square triangles or flying geese.
This puts this series at this status. I’m excited to see yet another beautiful top finished!
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
