Another Found Project - 8 leftover blocks
I found 8 half square triangles (HST) leftover from this quilt which I made for my granddaughter, Evie. - Now according to this picture, I should have had a lot more than 8, but all I could find was 8. Maybe I already made something else with some of them. Don’t remember.
Note - I already made a leftovers quilt - from whatever leftover fabrics I had from the first quilt. I thought a simple strip quilt could be used for the floor at the fabric shop if my DIL needed one there.
Apparently I had something in mind for them, but had done NOTHING with them.
So I decided to just make a pillow.
And I love it!
I had only 8 blocks and I needed 9.
So I decided to make a traditional basic star - and since I only had 8 blocks, I decided to put a single square in the middle to make the design complete.
I started with a blueish - turquoise/aqua color as I was trying to match the colors in the print.
I then left the whole thing for a couple of weeks. I found a pillow form and put it on the couch - but every time Iooked at it, something just didn’t seem right. I wasn’t impressed.
Was it the color? The center was so bold. Hmm. I didn’t like that. I wanted the star to be the focus and not the center block of the star.
The center was too bold. And slightly off.
Now, I don’t entirely mind the not “matchy matchy”. We don’t always need tones and shades and colors to match exactly. In nature, in any given item such as a tree or grass, there are various shades of green or browns or any other color.
But I decided that it was time to change it. It just bothered me too much every time I saw it.
It was only one block and I knew it wasn’t a big job to remove it and put in a different one.
So, I auditioned two fabrics I had considered using for the backing when I first made the pillow. In the end, I used a solid navy and just made a backing without a zipper - envelope style, I think it is called. It was super easy, fast, and very low stress.
Here is that audition.
In the end I decided to use the pink. It was a corally pink and very pretty. Yes, it was brighter than the light blue, but matched so well, I went with it.
I went to my machine, took the center block out with the seam ripper and then I inserted the new 5.5” square I just cut.
And
I left it downstairs for a few days and decided that I STILL didn’t like it. It was just too much pink! I didn’t even take a picture—that is apparently how unsure I was about it.
Did I have the nerve to remove the pink center and put on that light blue print after all?
I did not.
I opted, instead, to put an appliqued heart on top of the pink. I didn’t want to lose the pink, but I wanted to stop it from having so much pink!
What am I going to do wtih it? I don’t know. I’ll write my DIL and ask if she’s interested. It’s been a while since I made the other quilt for Evie, so she may not be using it anymore.
That was not a big deal project, but actually crazily satisfying.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
