“Double Chains ‘n Checkerboard”! #11 in the Stephanie Slewinski series top finished

By the time I had gotten to this point in the series, The fabrics I had left from this grouping of fabrics were mostly these very light fabrics - both the light blues and the pale coral pieces. I had been stumped as to how to use them in the other tops. I had used them - sort of, very sparingly, but I didn’t worry. I knew I could come up with something. To me, these fabrics just “went together” in saturation and colors.

But I needed to make an interesting top out of them - and for that, you need contrast. Obviously four very light fabrics (two very light blue and two light coral) together would be, possibly, very boring without something for interest.

And if you know me, you know that I’m a sucker for chains. I really think they add so much interest to a quilt - I really could make chain blocks in most of my quilts. I don’t, however, because I want to expand my style and not limit myself exclusively to them!

Anyway, I had done something sort of similar with this quilt - making every other block different shades - remember it?

 

I have often gone to my computer and worked on quilts with no special fabrics or even need in mind - using my Electric Quilt program. As such, I’ve played around with something similar to this many times - just not really done it yet.

I have done a Double Chain block - in my Upcycled Blues. Let me share that one here— It’s called Lacy Chains. Obviously there are many differences, however, including varying sizes of the chain pieces themselves.


 

So, until and if I rename this quilt, it will be Double Chains ‘n Checkerboard - not a very inspiring name, but it is what it is.

The layout is 11×12 so 88”x96” as each block is 8” finished.

This quilt is incredibly easy - just sort of boring.

I needed 66 of each of the two blocks so I could make an 11x12 layout.

You can see with these pictures that I mixed up the creams - using up everything I had left over from the series in the white on whites and added more from my stash. The solid blue is an almost navy found here in Poland. These blocks are 8” finished - as those little squares finish at 1”.

 
 

As simple as this quilt was to make, it makes a splash of a statement - in a very quiet way.

I do like how each of the quilts in this series are all very different. These last two do use navy or at least a darkish blue - but that’s because that is what I had. I would have preferred a dark green instead of the blue, but I HAD the blue and didn’t have to go try to find something else.

If you see a mistake in coloration, please tell me. Now is the time for me to fix anything I did wrong.

Here is the summary of the series. You can see how different each one is. I’m really happy about that and am satisfied with the tops. I hope to get these all quilted soon.

I pushed hard to just go ahead and finish this top up. I am itching to get on with the airplane series - have one cut out and wanted to to do it but I was afraid I might let this last one languish if I didn’t push to finish it. (I did mention it was a bit tedious, right?) It is worth it, however…so pretty!
