Third and Final Update on the Mercantile Quilt top!
It’s finished.
It’s on its way to Florida to be finished up there.
I had my machine down on the main level of the house and since I knew I’d be using the floor as my design wall a lot, I just left it downstairs for the duration.
I ended up making backgrounds for the circles. I tried to roughly follow the colors that the original Mercantile used. Since I’m not using any Lori Holt fabrics as the backgrounds, it was very rough. I am using 30s prints, though - or even older - some feedsacks and some reproduction and some newer ones that I thought just fit. It’s quite a mish mash. If the garden club members don’t love the madness of the colors, well, I tried.
Here are some pictures of the process.
The pieced border actually took me quite a few hours - as I was ready to work on the borders when I got up on Monday morning - first the pieced border and then the final plain one. It took until about 4 pm to do them though I did stop to make us a nice dinner.
Then it took another couple of hours to prepare it for shipping. I had to find out “how” to do it since I wanted to use a courier service and not the post office.
Here are a couple closer up looks of some of the blocks. Somehow once those blocks go on that background with the circle to give it all focus, it elevates those blocks to something very special!
Of course I know all the things wrong with it, but I am hoping that it will meet the needs of the ladies there. I am hoping it will be able to hang up and be shown on a wall or door or something.
I’ll let you all know when it gets quilted and all finished up for the Dade City Garden Club.
I know I’ll be relieved when I hear it has arrived in Florida!
I felt a huge sigh of relief once Fed Ex came and got my package. The tracking number will show all the steps it takes as it makes its way to Florida.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
