Blues strips Top #5 finished

Before borders

I put this project on hold while I focused on charity quilts. I do not want this series to languish, so I went back and worked on this incredibly easy quilt top before working on a family member’s quilt.

It doesn’t look that easy, but it really was.

It is my own design.

The one block is made up of a strips blocks that I trimmed to 10”x10” and then put a 4-1/4” square on each corner and sewed across it diagonally and trimmed off (some call this method easy corner triangles). Then the red blocks were a bit more complicated but not too hard. I did start by using the same blue fabric in the 2.5” squares in the center. I did also use the sew a square on the corner of the block effect on that block as well.

I am saving all the trimmed off corners because they are somewhat large. I’m going to see what I can do wtih them as it feels like I have quite a few of them.

This one is only 35 total blocks - 18 with the dark red and 17 using the strips blocks.

Any of the blue strips snowballed blocks that actually “look like” something - it’s strickly an accident. None of the blues arrangements are planned.

Remember? I made these strips because I originally wanted to make this top shown below which I had seen on You Tube (the top shown below on the right) except theirs was all colors -whereas I’ve limited my color palette to blues.

And naturally I way overdid it. But I did it because I had such a ridiculous number of blues strips - I think it was TWO large trash bags (think 30 gallon!) IIt was seriously crazy how many I had.

Now I did use a lot of them in my charity quilting binding and these strip tops did use up quite a few. By now I have used up a lot of them. Maybe I’m down to about one HUGE bag - but it’s really more like 2 medium bags.

I am making all of these to fit the Quilt of Valor requirements at least with regards to size. I know I’m using a lot of scrappy fabrics, but why not? People have families, children, dogs, cats, etc.

I had so much of my roll of strips leftover after making the first top that I decided to just keep going until I had used up these strip sets. I mean, why not? I trimmed everything into blocks, so I will just keep making tops until those blocks are finished up.

So this has become a mini series of its own.

The tops so far in order starting from the left.

This is where it is.

Now, with number 5, I did use cream and a darker red solid instead of bright red and white. And yes, I do think this current one is cool.

I think I have enough blocks already trimmed into squares for 2 more quilts. One will need 35 blocks - all strips blocks, and the other one, I think is only 20 blocks. I already have plans for both of them - one is more complicated - well, both are more complicated than number 5 or number 4.

Stay tuned! I’m determined to not let this series just drag on and on.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
