End of August Garden Report

I need to do this garden report.

It will be the only one I have from now on. In other words, this is it for this year. I won’t give another End of September report, etc.

I have zucchini/squash from plants that my friend, Raya, gave me back in June. It was cool early on and so they didn’t grow very fast. But they grew.

I also planted them in a less than ideal place - too much shade, actually. But I didn’t want to plant anything in my big garden area on the other side of the road.

These are the only two I found upon inspection of these plants. This is as of August 31.

As of the end of August I have not gotten any zucchini/squash from her plants, but there are a couple of them growing. Obviously not a bumper crop this year for me!

LOL. What an understatement.

I also have cucumber plants.

For the size of plants, I’m actually ok with what they are producing.

They are surviving on a lot of neglect. The plants are not all that large, but doing their best to give me some cucumbers.

Did I tell you I wasn’t really in the mood to plant a garden this year?

The biggest reason is that my freezer still had a lot of corn, yellow beans, grated zucchini and tons of pumpkin from last year. I have been working with a very, very full freezer, and I don’t like it ‘this full’. (It makes it hard if I find some meat on sale, for example). So I wanted to use up some of my extra and just take the year off from the garden. Plus, you know, I was in the states until May 8, and all that planning time, which is part of the fun, was nonexistent.

I simply didn’t want to take my precious time from quilting in the summer for gardening when I didn’t need any of it. Plus, I knew we were scheduled to go back to the states in September, and cleaning up a garden in September/October was something I didn’t want to take the time to do when, once again, time is at a premium. I didn’t want to. It was that simple.

(I also wasn’t feeling well pretty much all of May. First I had some sort of virus, I believe. Then, allergies. I started feeling much better by June.) But all in all, I want having a garden to be “my choice”. By this time in our lives, we don’t need a garden to exist. I want to do it if it is fun. If it isn’t, then I don’t.

That’s really all I am growing this year.

BUT, right near the zucchini/squash and cucumbers is one of my husband’s apple trees, which may be thriving because of the little tiny garden. Why? because I have been leaving the water running a trickle at the base of the tree while it’s been so dry.

We have quite a few apples on the tree. I’ll get my husband to pick some when he’s ready and I’ll make some apple Danish from them. They are pretty small, but plentiful.

And there you are. My less than spectacular garden 2025 end of season report. So far - about 12 cucumbers and 0 zucchini/squash. Apples to come.

Some years are like that.

But if you happen to have someone in your family who loves to garden - well, be sure to check out the fabric we have that features gardening. Besides, obviously having gorgeous florals, we have gardening fabrics as well.

Here are four. You can search harvest, garden, gardening, farm, farmer, etc.

Thank you so much for coming along with me on this journey.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
