Next Blues 2.5" strips project - "Brick Wall" top finished
I was in bed thinking about this roll of blue strips and suddenly this idea hit me. I thought, “Why not?” I can make what could possibly look like bricks with the red as the mortar, which is put between the bricks to keep them in place.
I did use the same red I’ve been using for others. It’s a nice bright solid red. So pretty! I cut all the little red pieces to 1.5”x5”. I used long strips as sashing between each layer of bricks (each row).
I did just trim the blocks off from my whole roll of strips that are sewn together. If they were a little over 10” long, I trimmed each brick to 5”x10”.
I then cut some of them in half so there were some 5”x5” squares as well.
This method is called “half drop block” but I was going sideways instead of up and down. This means that every other row has a 5” block at the beginning and ending of the rows and (5) regular 5”x10” bricks. The other rows have (6) 5”x10” blocks in them. All blocks have red sashing pieces between them.
It is that easy.
Now really, of course, I had already done the vast majority of the work when I put together the strips into this roll.
It took hours to sew them all together, press and then roll them up. By comparison, cutting them off the roll into bricks and then sewing this together went pretty fast. This is true especially after some other projects I’ve been working on.
I will bind this one, once again in that same bright red.
Here is the top. This one is 63”x82”.
This one is number 4 in this little mini series of how to use my blue strips which I sewed into a roll of 4 strips sewn together.
Is this enough for 20 blocks? We’ll see.
I am planning on two more tops and then I will probably be “out” of the roll. I actually have the next quilt top’s blocks cut off and ready to go, but the last one - we’ll see. I may be cutting it close as to how many blocks I need. Always, if need be, I can make a few more by sewing more strips together and making more blocks if I need to.
The answer to the question on the roll above is '
YES - it was enough for 20 more blocks.
This is my roll after I got the squares for the number 6 top. So, I guess I will plan on a number 7.
My series looks like this:
Here are the four individual tops I’ve made so far from these pieces.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
