"Bear Falls" - a newly finished panel top

When my husband saw this panel, he said immediately that it reminded him of Brooks Falls in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. I’ve been watching them via the bear cams.

And so it does. They can be found here, though I suspect the bears are soon going to hibernate.

Brooks Falls in the Katmai National Park has a section that looks like a falls - but also a part of the river that looks just like this panel does.

And so I decided to add some bear paw blocks across the top and the bottom.

I trimmed the panel just by taking off the white around it so that I didn’t have to cut off any of that precious panel from Hoffman. I couldn’t decide where to cut an inch or half inch or wherever from it. I liked the whole panel!

It finishes at a strange 58 3/4” x 69 1/4” because I didn’t want to cut off the panel any more than just trimming the white from the outer part. It left it at a strange size - 35 1/4”x 43 1/4”. It was very strange to work with those measurements.

I will get the pattern written up before I get it quilted, but really it’s not hard - I just used 2.5” cuts for the first borders (brown and tea stained). Then the cute little bear paws are 7.5” x 7.5” before sewing in the top - so you are working some pretty small half square triangles for the little claw part of the bear paw block.

I really like this one, so I’m going to plan on squeezing it into my things to quilt SOON so it will be done before fall is over. I will admit our fall has been pretty warm, so there has been almost no color here (yet) in Poland. Our birch trees are losing leaves, however.

In the middle of the other things I’ve been doing, I’ve been trying to work on something “fun” every day - even if I just do a little bit every day - I’ll finish up these pretty quilts eventually. I have 7 of my own I want to quilt and have them laid out with their backings ready to sandwich and tackle! We’ll see what I can get done reasonably.
