Another Leftovers TOP!

I do sometimes make ‘on point’ quilts where I make full blocks and then cut off half of the block when I finish it up. It’s just easier for me, usually, than making partial blocks for those side setting triangles. Anyway, one of you in the comments mentioned that it always hurt you a bit when I do that.

A Hot Mess

However, I have started to save them all together - and rather than put them in my things to use in a wild quilt (like A Hot Mess shown right), I decided to keep them all together and make a new top out of these leftovers.

Granny Square Folk

This is a summary of what I did with the cut offs from Granny Square Folk.

I had 14 of these side setting triangles. I needed 12 for this top. I also had 4 corner setting triangles - but actually still have these leftover. I’ll put them in my scraps to make up crazy blocks.

I decided on this layout.

Here is a summary of what I did.

The blocks were measuring about 18” across - so I cut 6 large 19” squares from the blue.

I then pressed and starched my leftover cutoffs from this quilt.

Then I placed the starched hst on half of the big 19” square, pinned it.

Then I sewed along the edge of the cut off piece.

I then repeated it for the other half of the blue 19” square. I placed another hst on the corner and pinned and sewed. Like this:

Then I cut them apart and pressed them. I pressed towards the blue.

I now had 12 large half square triangle blocks. However, I needed to trim them.

I decided to trim to 16.5” since I had a nice big 16.5” squaring up ruler. I will admit that I’ve not used it often, but it sure came in handy for this project! Makes me want to make more LARGE block quilts!

Then I had 12 nice big (16.5”) HST blocks.

I then proceeded to make the quilt top as any other time.

60”x77”

You can see by putting that sashing in between the blocks, it minimizing the off center effect that happened when I trimmed these blocks - also because they weren’t actually a full half of the block that I cut them from. This means that when I trimmed them down, they aren’t going to be perfectly even. And that’s fine.

That’s part of the charm of this particular quilt.

Enjoy.

Naturally I like it - for many reasons. The biggest one is “Why not?” I like a granny square, and an almost half of a granny square block is an interesting idea. AND, I used up most of those cut-offs - That makes me very happy!

I felt like I needed to show you what I did with these pieces. I really do not tend to just throw any pieces like this away - I try to reuse them somehow.

And now you know.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!

Thanks for coming along with me on this journey!
