"Granny Squares Dropped”

Finished! I managed to get this one done in the middle of some of the other things I’ve been doing lately.

This is another Granny Square quilt. Let me share with you the ones I’ve made so far.

Quite a few, actually.

Then there is this one. It’s a Granny Square block, sorta, anyway, only a different layout, and then those blocks are put in a half drop block layout. That means I made it in rows and then every other row comes down half a row. It looks like this - This is the layout for a queen size quilt using 2” squares. I pretty much laid out my blocks using my 2” strips and cut up squares. In other words, I did not strip piece this one. The block could be strip pieced, but I purposely was trying to use up my pieces from 2” strips and various pieces I had.

I call this a granny square block even though I don’t think technically it is called that. It just “looks like” one on point.

88”x100”

I made this one from scraps and I pulled from my 2” strips bags - and I’m very happy with it. I had a bunch of scraps that I hadn’t cut up from a couple other quilt tops and before I stripped a lot of it, I went ahead and prepared the squares for these blocks.

I used a variety of whites and creams as the whites.

I was trying to use 30s prints or things that looked like American Jane, 30s or Lori Holt colors. In other words, bright and cheery. I used this folk fabric on the back.

You can see a bit of this on the front when I hang this quilt up on the line. When it is lying flat, you can’t see through it.

I like this one using the 2” cut squares, but I’m sure it would also look good in 2.5” squares though of course, there wouldn’t be as many squares. Maybe I’ll try that one as well - maybe in a single colorway or make it a two color quilt - maybe red and blue? That would be different and I could just pull from my bags of that particular color.

I put this quilt in my 2” series of quilts. That simply means I made the quilt using primarily 2” strips and squares. I usually had a background color as well.

Here is that series. Warning. It’s LARGE! Many of the patterns are on my free patterns page if I wrote it up for you!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!

I did get the pattern written up. It’s here.

I made it for the queen size, but of course, you can make yours smaller or larger as desired! Note - I did write it for someone using squares as I did. it is a bit slower than someone doing it with strip piecing, but since I’m going at this one with the idea of using up scraps, then that’s how I wrote it.
