Mid August Garden Update
This year everything for me has been very slow when it comes to the garden.
It’s been dry as well and I probably haven’t been watering as much as I should have. Just because I got such a slow start, I think my enthusiasm was somewhat quenched by the slowness of it all.
As usual, I let the weeds get ahead of me.
I went through and weeded last week every day - well, at least several days - for an hour at a time and I rescued the corn and sunflowers from the weeds. I cleaned out some of the pumpkins, but not even all of them.
I decided that the rest will just have to be the the survival of the strongest, because I’m not spending all my time on weeding! :)
It’s mid August and I’ve gotten my first tomatoes.
My zucchini is doing well. Well, at least okay. I didn’t fertilize like I probably should have, but we’re getting enough. it’s enough for me and enough to share.
My pumpkins are coming along.
Everything is much later than last year due to our cool May and early June. But it’s gardening - not something I can entirely control!
The corn didn’t germinate like it should have.
So far, I’ve had plenty of flowers, then tomatoes and zucchini and snap beans - purple, which turn to green when I cook them.
Sunflowers should be opening up soon.
Some of my corn will come along - but even it is much slower than most years. But it is what it is. I can’t control it and I will just enjoy the ride. If it always worked the same every year, I mean, what fun would that be? That would be like asking your Egyptian friend “What’s the weather like?” You already know - no need to ask. (Answer - “hot and dry”)
So, no records this year. My Big Max pumpkins are starting to form. Even they won’t be setting any sort of records at all. I’m hoping they will actually mature before our weather changes and the plants all die on me. I’m okay with one big pumpkin per plant. :) We’ll see.
So here’s the last photo for today - the pretty flowers by the road.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
