Quilty Advent Calendars

I have decided that I must have been sleeping under a rock for the past few years.

Finally, yes, FINALLY I’ve come around to seeing all the Advent Calendar/Boxes that are quilt related.

Where have I been?

I don’t know. I think that I’ve been kind of oblivious to all the sewing related things that people are trying to get you to buy on You Tube.

Seriously - I’ve been out of that particular loop when it comes to You Tube!

I’ve watched a lot of You Tube channels but I often click out mentally or physically when the video starts being a huge advertisement - especially if I thought it was simply an informational video and it turns into a shopping experience.

Well, this year I was intrigued with Carolina Moore’s You Tube channel when she said something about opening 22 different Advent calendars/boxes that are either quilt related or quilt-adjacent such as tea/chocolate. I’m not interested in the chocolate or tea, but I am interested always, in the things related to quilting!

I guess I’m fascinated because at least on You Tube, we are hearing about how people are struggling financially, etc. I was wondering if this was affecting the sales of such a thing.

However, from what I’ve seen - it appears that more and more of these are popping up every year. The most expensive one is over $300 that I saw.

As I think about “why” anyone would buy these - I think there might be many reasons, but I’m guessing a couple of the main ones are -

  1. We women tend to buy all or almost all the presents in the household and don’t get many surprises for ourselves - thus, buying a box of gifts that relate to quilting is a bundle of gifts that are a surprise that we believe we will enjoy! We are buying the experience!

  2. At least a small hope that we will actually get something new and exciting in the boxes - maybe something we didn’t even know existed in the quilting world!

So tell me, have you bought a quilting related or sewing related advent calendar any time in the last few years?

If so, tell us - what was your experience?

Did you get things you ended up using or did you share with friends because you already had a lot of the notions, for example Did you open the presents one a day? Did you feel in the end, that you were happy with what you got for your money or would your money have been better spent just buying certain things you want directly?

I’m fascinated with this. I guess the Advent calendars have been getting bigger and better over the last few years and I’ve not even been aware. I’ve been stuck in the past where we bought the chocolate candy ones and each door had a cheap piece of chocolate behind it (which wasn’t even that good). That’s probably because we don’t have any kids at home and I don’t buy them anymore! :)

However…those quilty/sewing ones…maybe they are tempting me.

How about you? Tell us about it!
