"Classy" top finished

I made this simple top for my daughter who graduated with her PhD from Clemson in August.

I hadn’t seen her actually wearing her school’s colors until recently. Then I did. She had on a sweatshirt from there, so I thought it was time to make this top.

The Shoe Fly blocks are 6.5” and that means the purple squares are cut 6.5” squares. I cut the side setting triangles at 10” and then cut like an X to make them. The corner setting triangles I cut at 5-1/2” and then cut once across diagonally. Other than that, the little HST (half square triangles) were 2.5” before being sewn in the block.

I used two fabrics that are from the Quilted Twins. Let me share those links with you.

I did not make this one a big one. It is definitely planned to only be a lap quilt - about 49”x65” or so. Since it is on point, the numbers weren’t completely even though I did round off to the closest 1/2”.

I had less than a yard of the Clemson fabric in the center blocks but I had a couple of yards of the outer fabric. I guess you could say I preferred the outer fabric.

However, when the top was finished, I was very pleasantly surprised. You could definitely do this with any college or ball team that has two colors.

Because I usually make larger quilts, this one did go together quickly even though I spread it out over several days - as I was doing some focused quilting as well. I actually talked myself into putting on the borders Saturday night when I thought I was finished working on my own quilts for a while.

I only needed 1/2 yard of the center fabric and the one on the outside took 1-1/2 yards. The purple was 1-3/8 yards and the white took 1-1/8 yards. I will need some more purple to bind it as I’m planning on a nice dark binding.

So there you go. This was a nice, quick top. If you need one - here’s the layout.

And there you go. I hope today’s lap quilt was pleasant for you!

Have a great day wherever you are reading.

Thanks so much for coming along.
