"Neighborhood" quilt top finished
I reworked the coloration on this free pattern found here and made it brighter and lighter.
I also added an inch to the outer border all the way around.
This is my top - and I’m very happy with it.
There is a bit of applique on it - the two trees on either side of the house are appliqued on.
I kinda thought it might be cute to applique a cat on the roof but then decided that it wasn’t very realistic to do that as the house is SO big compared to the trees - how could they get up there? Maybe a monkey could go straight up the side of the house…but cats?
Can your cat climb up a straight wall of a house?
Anyway, I did use my Lori Holt colors—or sort of anyway. I was trying to use up my fabrics of hers in this as they make a bright happy quilt without being in your face BRIGHT. I mean, I’ve made bright quilts before. Let me show you a couple! This top is not nearly as bright and wild as these two are.
In case you are curious, this is now my seventh top I’ve made featuring houses/buildings.
I think I’m ready to tackle a barn or a bigger house or apartment building now.
Or I may go on to finish something else for a while. I’ve gotten houses out of my system for a bit now. Not completely, but at least I’ve done a few now.
I will tell you that since planning/writing this blog post I’ve finished another top with houses that is my own design/twist. Houses are pretty basic - at least this style is.
I also want to make BIG and more detailed house as the center of a medallion quilt. I also saw a pumpkin house quilt and I think that would be nice medallion quilt. So…there’s that. These are two more of things I’d like to try.
I’d also maybe like to try one featuring the Polish fabrics and making it reminiscent of Zalipie, Poland. Not sure how to do that. I’m thinking…
Oh, and I did order three (3!!!) BOM from Shabby Fabrics that feature houses a couple months ago. I hope to be able to pick up the first few blocks when we pop back to the US for our daughter’s “hooding”. Mom said I’m getting envelopes for me there in Florida! :)
Those blocks are completely different and I’ve never subscribed to any BOM or subscription boxes or anything like that before, but I guess at the moment I was feeling flush. :) I was also overwhelmed with how cute I thought they were. I’ll keep you posted on those as I get them and do them. I’m not sorry - I do not feel buyer’s remorse in case you are wondering. In fact, I’m kind of excited to see what I’ve got coming. Yes, they are kind of expensive, but they are way more detailed and I think include laser cut pieces. I’ll show you when I can.
Thanks again so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
