A Week of "In Progress" Projects - #4 - very small 9 patches Double 9 Patch top
I was watching Edyta Sitar’s You Tube channel - which seems more like a Quilting Shopping Network channel - a beautiful one at that - than a regular quilting vlog - when she talked about a 9 patch challenge.
Make 9 patches in three sizes - 2.25”, 3” and/or 6”, you can send them a photo of your finished 9 patches by the end of the summer and you will be entered into a drawing - for every ten 9 patches, you will go in one time. This seems pretty fun to me, so I thought I’d see what I can do. Now, truthfully, if I did win the drawing, I’d probably redirect the prize, or tell them to choose someone else - but it might be fun to try. Just for fun AND because I love making these!
Anyway, I’ve made quite a few just 9 patch quilts—most of which are Irish Chain or Double 9 patch blocks. I’ve made multiples of those, but I just now saw that her blue and white one is actually made of very small 1.25” strips. That has piqued my interest. These little squares finish at 3/4” and the 9 patch finishes at 2.25”.
I want to try!
(I sometimes wonder about myself - as I vascillate between huge 18” blocks down to the quite small - though not really miniature —not into those yet.)
So, I decided to draw up a Double 9 patch with blue and cream in the size of a Quilt of Valor. I guess I’m thinking about that right now - summer and all and our Summer QOV challenge. I know those isn’t a panel, but still…why not try it? Woudn’t it be mighty fine? Maybe a lady vet could get this one?
This one is 65”x83” and in spite of the fact the blocks are small, I thought it might be fun to try this one. I don’t get tired of making 9 patch blocks.
So this is where I am on this one. I just cut out strips - I am going to use a scrappy cream and grayish blues for the blue part in hopes it will be an antiquey looking quilt. We’ll see. I will just cut and sew and cut and sew. I don’t want a lot of leftover strips since these are cut at 1.25” and not a regular 1.5”. Normally if I cut too many, I don’t mind at all as I just throw them into my strips bags. However…these…not so much. I’m itching to start stiching strips on these now. I will make it scrappy. I am starting with this off white, but will go find some more so I’m not restricted to this cream. I want to use a variety of them.
It is possible I might throw some red in there. I’ve not fully decided on that yet. You see how far along I am on this one, so I am able to change at any moment.
Just out of curiousity, I decided to find other quilts I’ve made either of a simple Irish Chain with small blocks OR a Double 9 patch quilt. I’ll put them below.
However this one will be different as it will be SMALLER blocks.
So anyway, the one I will make now will also be smaller. All four of those shown are large quilts.
And I don’t really know where they all are. :( I really liked the first one, but as I look at the quilting, wow. I’ve gotten so much better than I was in 2015 when I made that one! It’s been a while since I made one like this anyway.
So, there’s this one. Just started. It will take a while as the blocks will be tiny.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
