“Smart Set”

I decided to just go ahead and use the leftover blocks I had from this quilt. I had gone to town making blocks and simply made way too many blocks!

It was crazy!

I had 13 blocks leftover. I used 12 of them in this top. Because I didn’t like my choices as to design with only 12 of these enormous blocks, I went ahead and worked up this layout AND then used the empty space as design elements.

To let you know how big these blocks are - well, I used 2.5” strips and each of the sections is 10” finished, so a block is 20”x20”!!! Isn’t that crazy big? In order to get the big empty blocks on the corners, I actually cut 10.5” squares and pieced them.

This one is certainly different.

As I placed the blocks on the floor, this is how it looked initially. I did move some more blocks around before I took the blocks to the sewing room, but this kind of shows what I was was doing.

These were my ugliest blocks, by the way. On the right is the first top I made with these blocks. I kind of went to town using oranges. Ugh.

But I did pull these pieces from my bags of strips, so I felt good about that.

The beige is made from a set of bedding my DIL gave me. Two sets, in facts, in fact. I’m grateful as I needed a lot of that background.

I like them both, but not at the level of some of my other quilts. :) I think I should have gone a little lighter with the oranges and yellows and used more browns and greens. It is what it is.

Anyway, here is this top. It’s 96”x96” because I added that larger plain border. I considered using a colorful border but opted to keep it “minimal”. :) LOL

I named it “Smart Set” as a play on a “smart setting” because I didn’t have enough blocks to make a regular setting so I used some empty blocks.

Thanks for coming along with me on this journey.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
