Project Bags in process

I have decided to make some project bags - mainly for cross stitch or other flat projects that people might do - from some squares I had leftover OR from fabrics that I just wanted to use to make something beautiful.

I had a rather large piece of checkerboard fabric leftover from these quilts -

and I decided to take it apart to make 5x7 layouts for the fronts of several of them.

Why?

I thought I’d make some for presents - will probably take them back to the states and use them as hostess gifts for people who keep us in their homes or just for people who I think would like one. They are turning out so pretty - and I’m thoroughly enjoying using various pieces or partial pieces I’m finding in my sewing room.

I watched an incredibly long, slow, and thorough video one day while I was quilting charity quilts for several hours! :) (Yes, it’s long and slow). I took notes and used this information to sort of make these. Naturally, it may just be a jumping off point because I already have changed some things.

I’ll show you.

I’m making a couple different variations. When I finish all I’m going to do, I’ll show a complete blog post and give a summary of my thoughts about what I’ve done and what I learned. Some things we do not have here in Poland, so I am trying to see what I can find or substitute.

but this is an “in process” blog post - not the finished one.

The bigger squares were all together and part of the kit of fabrics that I received when I got that one that had the Bobbin Box top that I finished.

Bobbin Box

I’ve already spent quite a few hours on these and have many more hours to finish up the ones I’ve gotten cut out and started. I’m not doing them for any specific purpose nor do I have a deadline, so that’s fine. These can easily be the thing I work on when I need a break from larger quilts.

They are fun. I do enjoy making bags of a sort as wonderful change and a quick fix to get some finishes that are really nice. I get a lot of dopamine hits with each finish - there’s just something about them!

While I was doing some more research on these, I found yet another video - this one much shorter and as I started watching it, more succinct video but similar to the one above. I mean, it appears that the measurements are overall the time.

And now that I found that second one, I have found several others. I may morph these project bags into including vinyl as well.

Why? Well, remember those clear vinyl bags we used to ship the quilt bag sets to Ukraine in 2022? Well, many of them were torn out - for example, the sewing of the zipper tore through the vinyl and we didn’t use it. But I saved all of them because I knew the vinyl was nice and would possibly be able to be used once I cut up the bags and removed the vinyl.

So, I’ve been doing that.

As such, I think this “project bag” thing will end up being quite long and involved.

But I will share some of the bags as I work on them. I am not thrilled necessarily with what I’m doing which is why I’m searching for a different solution to everything. Naturally I’m trying to do a few things just a bit differently depending on my supplies.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
