“Scrappy Jazzy Wonky Stars” in progress
I’m working on this top which is inspired by Jessica Dayon with her Scrappy Days quilt along earlier this year. Now I didn’t have time to make it with her quilt along - I had too many other things to get caught up with, but I finally started this. I had fully intended to make it along with her. Sadly, I didn’t make it.
BUT, I’m working on it now. It’s not an exclusive project, meaning I’m doing other things as well, but I’m going to try to get this one without too much undue stress on all the things I want to do - just because it is a perfect project for my 2.5” bags of already cut up strips.
Field of Wonky Stars - my free pattern on our free patterns page
I’ve made stars before from my 2.5” bags - that is this quilt. So making stars from my 2.5” strips bag isn’t entirely new. But this particular exact rendition is a bit different.
I’m working out of my 2.5” strips bags and as such am making the stars wonky! Jessica doesn’t make her stars wonky at all, but I really wanted to use my 2.5” pieces, so I went with wonky. Plus I find them kind of fun.
I making the middle of my stars a 2.5” square and the star points start out as another 2.5” squares. This is a 9 patch made of some 2.5” squares and then the star points blocks which are also 2.5” squares.
As I put this top together, I’ll just add the sashing and cornerstones as I go. I do have all the red stars made up already and hope to get my oranges finished soon. But I need to add teal and royal so I can keep putting together rows.
I am including sashing and cornerstones like Jessica did. Because I’m really following her idea - I won’t be sharing a free pattern for this particular design since I’m basically following her quilt along. In fact, if you want to buy HER pattern, it is linked here. ( I tried to link it but because of where we are located, Etsy didn’t want to let me see it, so this is the best I can do which is giving her Etsy patterns page.) I’m not doing entirely her pattern but I am doing this one inspired by her quilt along. Because I saw her quilt and got to thinking it would fit nicely into my 2.5” series, I thought it would be nice if anyone wants to make hers you can use her pattern if you need it.
I did change my layout to this shown below. I added another color - and am making this quilt into a queen size quilt. Since I did not look at or buy her pattern, I’m not positive of her top’s measurements—I only know what I am doing.
I am someone who actually prefers for the outer binding to not touch the cornerstones - as I like a floating top. So I added another round of a scrappy border. I also put the cool colors in the middle of the quilt with edges filled with “hot colored stars”.
I am leaving the main part of the star using white or cream or even off white plain or almost plain fabrics. Sashing pieces are white based with some print or design, however.
I did take pictures of making the wonky star points. I’ve done it multiple times and probably most of you know how to do it already, but just in case…here are some pictures.
I’ll be kind of sneaking this project in on myself. I counted up how many red, orange, yellow, green, teal, etc. stars I need to make, and am starting on them. However, I am going to start putting it together as I go anyway, row by row. This is also how Jessica recommended doing it.
The first row only uses a few colors, so I was able to finish up enough of those stars in those colors to use. I will sash and use colorful cornerstores, hopefully from my already cut up 2.5” squares boxes (for the cornerstones).
I’m pulling from my 2.5” white based strips for the sashing pieces and am cutting to 6.5” long.
I can tell already that by doing it row by row and adding each row of stars as I have them worked up, it will be a self encouraging way to get it done. In other words, when I add rows, it just helps me want to keep going because you see the progress.
I will just share with you once in a while as I grow the top.
Here is Jessica’s introductory video should you want to follow her videos. She is a designer now with Blank Quilting, I believe.
