Airplane Quilt series #2 - Simple Shadowed Polaroids

I told you, I think, that this year is the year for me to begin to make some projects that I want to make and not just focus on scraps. One of those types of quilts I’ve wanted is to make— some airplane themed quilts.

I am starting with easy - as these are just using airplane fabrics and put them into a pattern that maybe I’ve already made. I have my eye on some pieced airplane blocks, and will work up to those. Those are definitely more involved than just using airplane fabric - but a start is a start, right? I’ve felt like I’ve neglected this series for far too long.

I decided to try to make this one using small squares - cut 3.5”. Because of this I fussy cut my airplane fabrics that I had so that a plane was in the center of that little block. It was a challenge as I don’t have a ton of plane fabrics, but it ended up being enough. My husband thought that even the line drawings were cool.

This quilt finishes at about 57”x75” or so.

First quilt in the Airplane series - also a lap size

This is my second quilt in the series. The first one was this one which was simply a panel of squares which I came across.

I ended up making the blocks very simply. The block which was meant to look like a Polaroid photo but shaded and placed on a blue background ended up being very nice.

My husband’s dad’s wife at the time gave each of us grown kids a Polaroid camera with ONE set of film back in the day. She said she wanted more pictures of us. The problem of course, is that we were dirt poor at the time, and we didn’t buy that kind of film. So, we never sent her any pictures, nor did we keep the camera. She didn’t stay married either, to my husband’s dad.

Anyway, I do like how it looked!

Of course, as I am looking at the photos, somehow I realized that I put two of the same print right above each other which I don’t like. I will probably change this and then just find a backing and get it ready to quilt. I won’t bother taking another picture again - you will just see the final result after I finish quilting it and share the finished quilt.

Here are some closeups of the blocks - At least a bit closer. Later I’ll show even closer. I think you get the idea however. The blocks finish at 5.5”x6” in the quilt (longer than wide).

This is the block - I did cut those side white pieces at 1.25”x3.5”. The top was also 1.25”x5”. The bottom I cut at 1.75”x5”.

Another photo -

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.

Oh - I found some paper pieced airplanes (patterns - quilts, not just blocks)! on Etsy. I showed them to my husband and there are a couple I want to try. I am probably crazy.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
