Five things I learned while in the states

There are several things I learned while in the states for this extended period of time this last trip.

  1. More of you read this blog than I realized. I’ll admit that I don’t examine the stats as I figured they would just discourage me, so I don’t even know how many read it. Several of you when coming through the cutting line in the shop mentioned that you read the blog. That was very kind of you.

  2. Americans are spoiled when it comes to quilting cotton. Yes, you are. You can afford to be very picky about matching backing, exactly matching shades, etc. because you can - because there is so much to choose from. Some of us just can’t. It’s just not available.

  3. Out in the real world of people, I am feeling more and more like a fossil. When we are surrounded with quilters day in and day out, it feels like a LOT of people sew. Then you go around other people and you begin to realize that sewing is mostly a lost skill. I hope many of us can change that but I wouldn’t be surpried if more people paint/draw than sew/quilt.

  4. It is helpful to find “your people” when sewing/shopping. Some of us are social sewers and other are not. Some are social shoppers and others enjoy shopping alone. Whichever you are - it is helpful to find the type of people who are and try not to force yourself to fit into the mold of the other person. We saw shoppers that prefer shopping alone come with people and get stressed out. I saw groups that specialize in being social while others focus on the sewing. It’s all fine.

  5. Quilt stores are all so different - and it’s great to visit them! Naturally we want you to visit Quilted Twins if you haven’t, but if not, visiting any quilt store in person is an invigorating experience. You get to see samples, patterns, fabrics and meet people who stretch your skills and experiences when it comes to quilting. I was able to visit several stores on our trip up north and I enjoyed each store.

So there you are - a variety of things I learned while in the states.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
