October 2024 Strips Cutting Report

This report is a bit early - and because I’ve been focusing this month on the actual binding, it’s a bit lighter than it could be (IOW, it’s underwhelming!). November’s report should make up for that as I will cut up the leftovers from the charity quilting into squares (for Ewa’s mom) or strips (for some Quick Strippie quilts) or just my standard strips.

From left - 1.5”, 2” and 2.5” strip

However, I did cut some in October. I am going ahead and giving the report early because I have an open day on the calendar.

In October, I cut up this many strips -

2.5” - 0.44 lbs.

2” - 0.11 lbs.

1.5” - 0.22 lbs.

This makes my total for this year as shown on this table here.

And my totals since I started keeping track.

While binding a 60”x80” quilt takes approximately 280” of strips, it actually takes more due to the diagonal seams and when you use short pieces, it uses exponentially more. Anyway, just to remind you, the charity quilt bindings took about 67 yards of fabric - or really, just quite a bit. However, because I have so much, I can’t say that I’ve noticed a LOT of difference. My bags in my sewing room have gotten smaller, but I needed them to get smaller as they’ve been plugging up my room.

Here is that one bag of strips and here it is on the right - empty. If I use that calculation that a typical “Jelly Roll” weighs close to 16 oz (approx - usually a little less), then for using the most ideal calculations, then, I figure a yard of fabric may be around 5.5 oz. so, 120 quilts uses 41 lbs of these strips in order to bind all those charity quilts. I’m tickled about that, actually, and I think it is a bit more because I use many short pieces.

I can’t wait to finish up my binding totally as I’ve got a few days of cleaning up scheduled - at least say, 3 hours each day - both in my house in general, and in my sewing room where I’ve been binding. Each of us has our personal limit of neatness/messiness that we can stand before we begin to go nuts. I’m at my limit in a few parts of my house but I know if I get distracted and start cleaning (more than just cursory stuff), my binding won’t get done in a timely way so it has been pushed to first thing after getting this binding all done!

Then I want to get some of my other quilts quilted - and get back to my granny squares quilt. I am so chomping at the bit - but my body is telling me just to keep going, one step at a time and I’ll get there. So there’s that.

And that’s the end of my strips cutting report for October!

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
